ESTABLISHING THE OFFICE OF THE WAR AND ECONOMIC CRIMES COURT
Monrovia, Liberia – The embassies of the United States of America and the European Union in Liberia has congratulated President Joseph N. Boakai Sr., for the step taken to establish the office of the War and Economic Crimes Court in Liberia.
In the presence of foreign allies, members of civil society organizations, the media, and others, President Boakai issued and signed Executive Order 131 on Thursday, May 2, 2024, creating the office of the War and Economic Crimes Court.
Families who lost loved ones in Liberia’s brutal 14-year civil war will finally receive justice with the court’s establishment.
The United States of America’s Chargé d’affaires to Liberia, Catherine Rodriguez, commended the country’s leader for his audacious decision to establish the court on the US Embassy’s official Facebook page, just hours after President Boakai’s Executive Order.
“I commend President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr for taking this historic and courageous step to bring justice and accountability for the atrocities committed during the Liberian civil wars. The United States firmly supports Liberia’s establishment of the War and Economic Crimes Court and stands ready to assist all Liberians as it moves forward.”
In like manner, the European Union Embassy in Liberia (Germany, Ireland, France, Sweden) welcome President Boakai decision along with the legislature to establish the War and Economic Crimes Court.
The two embassies stated that, they will continue to monitor developments as the concrete next steps of this historic Liberian-led and Liberian-owned process become clear.
”We are optimistic that this initiative will bring and end to impunity for war and economic crimes, while promoting national reconciliation and sustainable peace.”
