Paynesville City, Liberia – Victor Osimhen scored twice as Nigeria defeated Sierra Leone 3-2 on Sunday, June 18, 2023, at the SKD Sports Complex in Liberia on Match Day five of the 2023 AFCON qualifiers. The Sierra Leonian used the SKD as home venue due to the current renovation of their National Stadium.

The Napoli Striker tap in from a close range on a counterattack followed by an easy finished to put the Super Eagles 2-0 ahead in the first half. However, the Leone Stars fought back to tie the scored at 2-2 through team Capitan Mustapha Bundu 18-yard finish and Italy based Augustine Karbo powerful shot at the edge of the 18-yard box.

Despite their best attempts, they were unable to salvage anything from the game as Nigeria’s Kelechi Iheanacho, a substitute striker for Leicester City, took advantage of a defensive blunder to secure a 3-2 victory for his country. With 12 points after five games, Nigeria is now in first place in Group A, two points ahead of Guinea Bissau, which is in second place with 10 points. With one point, Sao Tome and Principle are still last in the division.

The host nation, Ivory Coast, Tunisia, Burkina Faso, Egypt, Zambia, Morocco, Algeria, Equatorial Guinea, South Africa, Senegal, Nigeria, and Guinea Bissau have all confirmed their participation in the competition.

The following are additional outcomes from games held in similar qualifiers in Africa: Zambia defeated Ivory Coast, Central African Republic, and Angola 3-0; South Africa defeated Morocco, Equatorial Guinea, and Tunisia 1-0; and Angola defeated South Africa. Senegal, Botswana, Libya (1-0), and Lesotho (1-0) all defeated Comoros Island.
