AS NEC ANNOUNCES 72% OF PRESIDENTIAL RESULTS FOR 2023
Monrovia, Liberia – President George Weah has an unsettling lead, with 72% of the ballots cast in the October 10, 2023, presidential election counted so far. His opponent, former Vice President Joseph Boakai, is trailing behind with just 0.36% of the total votes cast.
At a press conference on Sunday, October 15, 2023, the NEC chairperson, Davidetta Browne-Lansannah, stated that the progressive results indicate that 1,355,140 valid votes have been tallied thus far, while 80,910 invalid votes have been recorded. These results come from 4,295 of the 5,890 polling places, or 72.92% of the total polling places.
The advantage is still held by President George Weah, but it is extremely narrow between him and Unity Party Joseph Boakai. As per the NEC, Ambassador Boakai has received 589,977 votes (43.54%) while President Weah has received 593,558 votes (43.80%). He has taken nine out of the fifteen counties thus far. Though he won the whole of Southeast, he is finding it difficult to increase the lead because he was unable to equal Amb. Boakai in the highly vote-rich Nimba and Lofa Counties.
Progressive results from 4,295 of the 5,890 polling locations or 72.92% of all polling places were released by NEC chairpeson Davidetta Browne-Lansannah on Sunday, October 15, 2023.
