Monrovia, Liberia – A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has been signed by the Intergovernmental Agency Taskforce on City Cleaning with the intention of fostering order in Monrovia and Paynesville. The multilevel governance taskforce is composed of the Liberia National Police, the Monrovia City Corporation, the Paynesville City Corporation, the Ministry of Public Works, and the Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation.

The commitments of Paynesville Mayor Robert Bestman, Monrovia City Mayor John-Charuk Siafa, Public Works Minister Roland Giddings, and Police Inspector General Gregory Coleman to return both cities to normalcy in the best interests of their inhabitants were reiterated.

The MOU gives the towns of Paynesville and Monrovia permission to start discussing the viability of creating a mutually beneficial roadmap that would encourage urban development and foster unprecedented municipal cooperation.

This is meant to incentivize municipal reforms and guarantee improved service delivery to citizens in both cities. With the ultimate goal of promoting orderliness, the Intergovernmental Agency Taskforce on City Cleaning now has a well-coordinated obligation to ensure the removal of markets and improvised structures along important routes.

According to a release, the task force initiatives will also help to improve fumigation services in Monrovia and Paynesville, guarantee the rehabilitation of water and sewage systems, and lessen pollution of all kinds.

In addition to promoting inclusivity at the local level and driving a result-focused disaster management initiative, such as fire prevention, these activities which are a part of the Intergovernmental Agency Taskforce on City Cleaning operations will also help promote climate action through flood prevention, biodegradation, encroachment on wetlands and alleyways, and emission control.

Among the tasks carried out by the taskforce is a more in-depth examination of social service establishments, including schools, theaters, dining establishments, seaside storage facilities, supermarkets, religious centers, petrol stations, hospitals, lodging facilities, and casinos.

In addition to enforcing applicable zoning laws, city ordinances, and other regulatory frameworks to support the maintenance of law and order, the task force will safeguard the sanctity of cemeteries in both cities and work to strengthen vehicle regulations to ensure public safety.
