Buchanan, Liberia – ArcelorMittal Liberia has demonstrated its strong commitment to safety on and off the road by certifying 29 professional drivers in Buchanan after they successfully complete a two-day Defensive Driving Program.
The first group of AML drivers proved their proficiency in implementing global safety standards during the theory and hands-on training sessions that preceded the certification ceremony.
The program was created to satisfy the company’s strict requirements for safe driving while giving drivers the abilities that are in line with globally recognized safety standards, according to Ruth Negash, Training, Development, and Compliance Manager at AML, who spoke at the ceremony.
“We decided to align the AML Driving Training program with international standards to make sure to train everybody who is going to be driving, because we want to transport all our passengers safely and protect the people on our roads from harm,” Negash explained.
Instilling defensive driving behavior through the training helps drivers foresee dangers and avoid collisions, she stressed. Since AML is firmly devoted to road safety and has zero tolerance for risky behavior, she continued, “We look forward to doing refreshers for anyone violating the rules.”
Negash further emphasized that certified participants are now required to contribute to the development of a culture of safety at AML, coach others, and take swift action when anything is not going as planned. The drivers who received the training were also commended by Fleet Manager Kolisa Freeman, who said that everyone shares responsibility for safety.
“Therefore, this program is more than receiving just a certificate, it is a reflection of our shared values—safety, accountability, and excellence on the road,” Freeman said. “What you have learned through defensive driving techniques, vehicle checks, and compliance protocols is not just about passing a test. It is about protecting lives, improving efficiency, and representing our company with the highest standards.”
Randy Reeves, a licensed driver, spoke on behalf of the graduates and thanked AML for the chance to learn new skills. He assured management that the lessons acquired will be used in their everyday job to maintain safe driving standards throughout the company’s operations.
Proactive driving skills like anticipating hazards, keeping safe following distances, adjusting to weather and road conditions, adhering to traffic laws, controlling weariness, and remaining vigilant while driving were all highlighted in the Defensive Driving Program.
Road and driver safety continue to be important aspects of ArcelorMittal Liberia’s business. The corporation wants to lower the risk of accidents and foster a culture of safety awareness that benefits its employees and the communities around them by funding programs like the Defensive Driving Program.
The newly qualified drivers, professional trainers, members of the Liberia National Police, and representatives from AML Management were there.
