Monrovia, Liberia – 57,393 senior students have enrolled to take the West African Senior School Certificate Examination this year, according to official confirmation from the West African Examinations Council (WAEC Office Liberia). Students from three schools in Guinea that now use the Liberian National Curriculum are among the 1,124 senior high school Students selected from all fifteen counties.
WAEC Head Dale Gbotoe clarified that the council is broadening its scope to include technical and vocational exams as authorized by the Ministry of Education at a briefing at the Ministry of Information on Thursday, April 2. Candidates with vocational backgrounds will be able to take specialized tests under the new system.
Thirty additional subjects have been added to the curriculum in order to keep Liberian students competitive with their peers in other WASSCE member states throughout the continent. Mr. Gbotoe stated that in order for senior students to graduate starting the following year, they must receive passing grades in at least two new disciplines in addition to mathematics, English, and civics.
According to him, Booker Washington Institute has already taken steps toward this updated curriculum by registering its students for 12 out of the 30 newly introduced subjects for the current academic year. The schedule for assessments in elementary and junior high schools has also been finalised by the council.
The third-grade exams are set for April 22, right after the ninth-grade exams on April 20 and 21.
In order to ease the burden on Liberia’s early learners, these third-grade exams will be held on their individual campuses, while the sixth-grade exams are set for April 23–24, 2026. Gbotoe thanked the Liberian government for paying the WAEC fees and paying off the country’s obligations during the announcement.
He stressed that these contributions are essential to guaranteeing the efficient administration and processing of the tests for every applicant who has enrolled.
