Monrovia, Liberia – The outgoing Political Leader of the Liberia People Democratic Party (LPDP), Jeneka Alex Tyler, Sr., has been replaced. A resolution approving the replacement of Liberia Former House Speaker Tyler was approved by more than two-thirds of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) members during an extraordinary meeting in accordance with Article 5, Section “C” of the party’s bylaws and constitution, which reads: “There shall be special sessions or mini conventions held to replace any official who shall contravene the By-Laws and Constitution of the Party, or who shall relinquish his/her position as a result of resignation, disability or death.”

Chief Moses Y. Kollie, the party’s chairman, was chosen as the new political leader of the party during the extraordinary meeting, pending the holding of a special national convention in 2024. The party also appointed D. Wa Hne, Jr. as its Acting National Chair in response to the opening left by Chairman Kollie’s elevation to Acting Political Leader. Mr. Hne was the party’s National Vice Chair for Political Affairs prior to this new development.

On June 1, 2023, the former Speaker resigned from his position as the party’s Political Leader and suspended his membership, citing his lack of confidence in the Coalition for Democratic Change’s new framework document as the primary driver of his decision. Also, Grand Gedeh County Electoral District #2 Representative Alex Chelsea Grant, the head of the LPDP’s legislative caucus, has resigned in writing, and the party has formally recognized receiving the resignation letter, citing same reasons as the Speaker.

In a letter dated June 8, 2023, Representative Grant expressed support for Joseph Boakai in the 2023 elections in October. At the conclusion of the extra-ordinary meeting, the party reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to President George Weah’s reelection in the upcoming 2023 October 10 presidential and parliamentary elections, promising to energetically campaign throughout all of Liberia.

The National Patriotic Party and Congress for Democratic Change are two additional members of the coalition that controls the government (CDC), along with the LPDP. Six additional political parties have just formally joined the partnership ahead of the 2023 elections.
