NPP Leadership in crisis ahead of National Convention

Monrovia-The National Patriotic Party’s leadership is once again in crisis as some members of the party’s standard bearer and national executive committee disagree on the amount of funding and delegates to invite to the national convention, which is set to take place on October 7, 2022, in Paynesville. The national executive committee decided on September 4, 2022, to invite 638 delegates with a budget of $100,000 USD, but they also agreed to send roughly 310 delegates if the funding of $100,000 USD could not be raised.

Addressing a press conference in Monrovia, NPP Secretary General, Andrew Peters, appealed to the Liberian government and international community to do all they can to stop the party’s standard bearer and Vice President, Mad. Jewel Howard-Taylor from bringing another confusion by inviting delegates out of the approved number.

According to him, Madam Taylor has reportedly failed to provide the funding she has given to one Morris Paye from her office purposely usurping the power of the party’s leadership by bringing delegates from all over the country without the knowledge of the secretariat.

Mr. Peters said it is unthinkable to see Madam Taylor usurping the function of the party’s leadership with 25 days gone from the 45 days given the James Birney’s leadership by the court to hold the convention and conduct the election.

The NPP Secretary General made it clear that Madam Taylor was supposed to deposit an amount of USD$90,000 and the party’s National Chairman, Senator James Biney provide USD$10,000.

Reacting to the allegation, the Political Advisor in the Office of the Vice President of Liberia, Puoo Wesseh, denied the claim against the standard bearer of the NPP.

According to him, the NPP Standard Bearer has already deposited the fund for the operation of the convention in the party’s account while the transportation for the delegates has been sent to chairpersons who will transport the others to Monrovia.

Wesseh added that the NPP leadership is demanding the fund for the transportation of delegates and operations which is against the normal procedure. He explained that some of the delegates have received their transportation and will arrive in Monrovia during the weekend.

It can be recorded the civil law court gave 45 days to the James Biney leadership to hold a national convention and conduct an election for the National Patriotic Party after a lengthy legal battle.
