The Head of the European Union Delegation to Liberia Ambassador Laurence Delahousse has stated that Liberia is lacking behind in terms of the abolition of the death penalty which has been acted upon by some of its neighbors and regional countries.
Ambassador Delahousse noted that the Liberian Legislature is taking slow steps toward the passage of necessary instruments for addressing critical national and international issues.
Amidst the Ambassador’s assertion, in July of this year, the majority bloc of the Liberian Senate in a plenary sitting voted to pass a portion of the Penal Code to abolish the death penalty and other capital offenses.
The EU Ambassador revealed that the European Union will shortly embark on a major partnership with the Liberian Government, to assist the Legislature to timely act on crucial and essential legislation that will be in the best interest of the Citizens and its international partners.
“We are going to embark on a partnership with Liberia, which aims to assist the Liberian Legislature to timely act on urgent and important instruments in the interest of the country and the international partners,” the EU Ambassador lamented.
Ambassador Delahousse made these revelations when he appeared as a guest on the Thursday edition of the OK FM a local radio station in Liberia on October 6, 2022, in Monrovia.
He at the same time noted that Liberia is a signature to all of these international treaties, but still lacking behind in terms of implementation.
Meanwhile, UN Women’s Country Representative to Liberia, Madam Comfort Lamptey is calling for an end to violence against women and girls, including harmful traditional practices like Female Genital Mutilation amongst others.
“It is about time now that we end the violence against women and girls, including other harmful traditional practices like female genital mutilation”.
Madam Lamptey narrated that the UN women with support from the European Union are working with the Government of Liberia and other local groups under the spotlight Initiative in ensuring the safety of women and girls, as well as women’s participation in the development process of Liberia.
“The UN woman with support from the EU is working closely with the Government and local groups under the spotlight initiative to ensure the safety of women and girls is the hallmark,” the UN Women Country Representative noted.
