Buchanan City, Grand Bassa County – ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental protection by joining the international community in celebrating World Environment Day (WED). The company’s monthly waste parade program, which brought together employees and community members in Yekepa and Buchanan to promote cleanliness and raise awareness of sustainable practices, coincided with this year’s occasion, which was observed on Tuesday, September 9.
In order to show the mining giant’s continued dedication to preserving a safe and healthy environment, AML’s Environmental Champions led clean-up exercises throughout the company’s work locations while wearing specially designed T-shirts.
AML’s Superintendent for Environment in Buchanan, Duke Davis, characterized World Environment Day as a personal call to action as well as a worldwide reminder.
“World Environment Day serves as a time for reflection on our environmental impact and a renewed commitment to preserve the planet. It also serves as an opportunity for promotion and an appreciation of nature for us at AML. We encourage our managers, supervisors, and employees to take environmental cleanliness seriously and to implement our environmental policies in every aspect of their work through initiatives like the litter parade,” Davis added.
According to him, AML has implemented several measures to protect the environment in its concession areas, such as a zero tolerance policy for oil spills at operational sites, the building of sediment control structures to reduce ocean and sensitive ecosystem contamination, monthly water quality monitoring at discharge locations, weekly air and noise monitoring using cutting-edge equipment, such as Dust Sentry monitors at the Buchanan Port, and monthly waste management awareness programs for staff and contractors.
ArcelorMittal Liberia prioritizes long-term sustainability by integrating environmental protection into all aspects of its operations, even beyond these technological precautions. The company funds training programs for staff and contractors to guarantee adherence to international best practices, collaborates with nearby communities to raise environmental consciousness, and provides funds for projects that protect and restore biodiversity in mining regions.
The leadership of AML has emphasized that preserving the environment is a fundamental principle that directs the organization’s operations in Liberia, not merely a matter of compliance.
