FOR THE REHABILITATION OF THE ST. JOHN RIVER BRIDGE IN GRAND BASSA COUNTY

In order to help the Liberian government repair the St. John River Bridge in Grand Bassa County, ArcelorMittal Liberia has provided significant logistical and technical support through the Ministry of Public Works. Engineers from Arcelor Mittal Liberia and the Ministry of Public Works worked to fix the bridge’s damaged bearing, which had been impeding regular vehicular traffic and driving up the cost of necessities in Grand Bassa and other nearby counties for the previous few weeks.

AML’s Chief Executive Officer, Jozephus Coenen, gave the company’s technical team instructions to provide the maximum amount of support and to remain active until the repairs were finished in response to a request from the Liberian government. AML provided a variety of resources to help with the reconstruction of the St. John Bridge, including 200 tons of hydraulic jacks, steel plates, rubber membranes, a 10KVA generator, a truck, support for elephant feet, cranes, a compactor, fuel, and labor.

In addition to covering the cost of hotel lodging and food for a five-person technical team from the Ministry of Public Works for the duration of the St. John River Bridge rehabilitation, Arcelor Mittal Liberia has been providing tents and catered meal services (three times a day) for the security team assigned to the bridge for the past week.

Winston Daryoue, the spokesman for AML, stated that AML is pleased to offer such support in the form of technical and logistical services as it has been a longtime partner of the Grand Bassa and the Liberian people.

“The St. John River Bridge is a major access point, and the bridge work was necessary to ensure continuous economic activities in neighboring counties,” stated Daryoue.

Heavy-duty vehicle movement was prohibited, which had an impact on regular automobile traffic over the bridge. It is reported that Normal travel of all vehicles has now resumed.
