Monrovia, Liberia – The ArcelorMittal Liberia’s (AML) Fire Service and Grand Bassa Fire Service Division quickly suppressed a possibly catastrophic fire at the Port of Buchanan. Operations were seriously threatened by the fire, which started aboard a vessel anchored at the port, but it was put out before it could spread and thereby prevent a huge calamity. The incident was first reported by security staff at the port, according to Bassa-based Empire TV’s account, who promptly informed Port Manager Jonathan Kaipay.
Understanding the seriousness of the matter, Kaipay immediately asked ArcelorMittal Liberia for help. Within minutes, AML’s fire crew along with the Grand Bassa Fire Service activated firefighting tools and people to help to limit the fires. This quick response guaranteed the port’s infrastructure and activities’ safety and stopped the fire from spreading. Before it could inflict any appreciable damage, the fire was under control.
Kaipay says, “We really appreciate the fast reply from ArcelorMittal Liberia and the Grand Bassa Fire Service Division.” He said their courageous and effective actions stopped what might have been a far more dire scenario.
He said that although the reason of the fire is under investigation, he hope to learn more following discussions with the captain of the vessel.
Many Buchanan citizens turned to social media following the incident to show thanks, complimenting the courageous men and women from AML and the local fire department for their prompt reaction. The community praised the cooperation and efforts that guaranteed port safety and stopped what would have been a catastrophe.
