Benefiting nine fenceline communities.
Monrovia, Liberia – In order to further its dedication to sustainable development, ArcelorMittal Liberia has invested more than $58,000 in the most recent phase of the company Biodiversity and Conservation Program, which will benefit more than 60 local stakeholders and nine fenceline villages in the Yarmein area of Nimba County.
By promoting sustainable agriculture through the cultivation of vegetables, pigs, poultry, and swamp rice, this program which is carried out in collaboration with Humanity Care Liberia empowers local farmers and lessens the strain on Liberia’s forestlands.
At the Baapa inaugural event, AML officials and community leaders highlighted the program’s dual goals of sustaining livelihoods and protecting biodiversity.
According to Samuel Peter, AML’s Superintendent for Biodiversity and Conservation, “this program is about empowering farmers, not about AML making money.”
100% of the harvests and profits will remain in the hands of local participants, who will also get funding for farmers’ equipment, seeds, and food assistance.
“Our community relations staff and local leaders, such as Marie Torlo of the Yekepa Vegetable Gardeners, deserve special recognition for demonstrating what can be achieved when collaboration and goals are combined,” he added.
