Monrovia, Liberia – The healthcare delivery systems of Nimba and Grand Bassa Counties are poised to experience a major transformation and boost in quality service delivery with the construction of new facilities for the G.W. Harley in Sehyikimpa, and the Liberian Government Hospital in Buchanan − thanks to the significant support of ArcelorMittal Liberia in partnership with the government of Liberia.
With many structures being raised, the G.W. Harley Hospital’s new facility in Sehyikimpa, Nimba, is rapidly moving forward. Liberians and residents of Nimba County have embraced this development.
“The building of this large hospital in our hometown makes us happy. It would be very beneficial in ensuring that our people can get high-quality healthcare. Although there will be some unskilled jobs that others will perform, we think that this is the first significant chance that has presented itself to us and that it will lead to employment opportunities for prepared individuals in the medical field,” Chester Gentee, a resident of Sehyikimpa Town, stated.
In addition to offering the population vital healthcare services, the hospital will support the growth of the country’s infrastructure development. The team building the health center is on schedule, according to site supervisor Patrick Quoi, who made this statement in a recent interview while pointing to three enormous structures that have already been built and interior design that is in progress.
According to Patrick, the structures fall into many categories, each of which was created with a certain function in mind. One of them, he added, has 38 rooms and is meant for an emergency ward. There are 38 rooms in the laboratory as well as a 37-room ward in the MCHPID building, which is where patients are supposed to stay. Plastering has been completed in all three buildings, and the contracting team is getting ready to construct ceilings, lay tiles, and do other interior tasks.

The Surgical building, Patrick stated would be the second phase of the project, the ICU, and the Maternal Ward are all anticipated to be constructed soon.
The Liberia Government Hospital and the new G.W. Harley Hospital are being built as part of a broader corporate social responsibility (CSR) program by ArcelorMittal Liberia, a significant contributor to the socioeconomic advancement of Liberia. The company is contributing a substantial amount of funding to the Nimba project, having invested USD $2 million of the USD 3.5 million overall project cost. AML is contributing USD 1.7 million of the USD 3.5 million project cost for the Buchanan hospital according to the company.
“We are proud to contribute to the construction of the new public hospitals in Nimba and Bong Counties. As a company we’re deeply committed to the communities where we operate, this project reflects our dedication to improving public health and infrastructure for future generations,” said Eric Swen, Community Development Manager, ArcelorMittal Liberia.
This action is being taken at a time when the healthcare system in Liberia is under tremendous strain, with many hospitals dealing with congestion, lack of funding, and a scarcity of medical personnel. Additionally, rural parts of the nation continue to be neglected and have restricted access to basic healthcare services. The new facilities will offer both urban and rural residents high-quality, reasonably priced treatment, which will help ease some of these difficulties.
Before the project started, ArcelorMittal stepped in 2022 and spent USD $41,451 to repair the deteriorated roofs of the existing G.W. Harley Hospital buildings, stopping the leak that made it difficult to provide high-quality services during the rainy season.
In order to help the G.W. Harley Hospital, the Liberia Government Hospital in Buchanan, and a number of neighborhood clinics in the two counties get over some obstacles, AML contributed large consignments of necessary medical equipment to these facilities late last year.
Also, the company provided funding for the establishment of a community clinic in Gbapa, Nimba County, and has continued to back government initiatives aimed at enhancing healthcare in Liberia. As the new Government Hospital in Buchanan Grand Bassa County is being built, the new G.W. Harley Hospital in Sehyikimpa is also being built.
