Monrovia, Liberia – The Liberian president Joseph N. Boakai has appealed to the international community and UN members to back Liberia’s bid for a non-permanent membership on the Security Council for the 2026–2027 term. During his address on Friday, September 27, 2024 in New York, President Boakai highlighted Liberia’s past accomplishments as a founding member of the United Nations and the League of Nations. He outlined Liberia’s contributions to the principles of security, peace, and human dignity, all of which are reflected in the nation’s active involvement in international affairs and the Constitution of the nation.
“Liberia’s history is closely intertwined with the ideals of the United Nations. Our commitment to fostering peace, resolving conflicts, and advocating for self-determination across Africa is well documented,” President Boakai stated.
In order to emphasize Liberia’s active role in the founding of important continental and regional institutions, including the African Union (AU), the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and the Mano River Union (MRU), the Liberian Leader stated that these groups have been essential in advancing development, collaboration, and peace throughout Africa.
President Boakai acknowledged the difficult history of Liberia, which was characterized by civil war, but emphasized that the country’s tenacity has been a potent symbol of its progress toward peace and reconciliation.
“Liberia is well-positioned to meaningfully contribute to the work of the Security Council because of our unique insights into peacebuilding and conflict resolution, which come from our experience in overcoming conflict.”
Liberia’s priorities on the global stage, particularly in addressing climate change, regional security, and sustainable development, align with the broader international agenda, the Liberian Leader avowed. President Boakai reaffirmed Liberia’s commitment to multilateralism and argued in favor of many perspectives in international decision-making processes.
“Liberia will bring to the Security Council a perspective shaped by our history along with our unwavering commitment to the values enshrined in the UN Charter.”
President Boakai pleaded with UN members to support Liberia’s candidacy as he wrapped off his plea, highlighting the country’s preparedness to meaningfully contribute to world peace, security, and governance.
