Monrovia, Liberia – President Joseph N. Boakai assured Liberians that despite recent concerns, peace and stability had returned and that tensions in Lofa County along the country’s northern border remain under control.
The President acknowledged that the people were worried about the happenings at the Liberia-Guinea border during his third Cabinet meeting in the Executive Mansion Tea House, but he maintained that the situation “remains peaceful,” praising the residents’ composure and the quick diplomatic response.
He said that people who were directly affected by the issue shown incredible composure even in the face of provocation, and that government officials, in collaboration with security guards and local authorities, took proactive steps to ease tensions and stop them from getting worse.
“At a very difficult time when people’s lives are disrupted and emotions are high, the maturity of the residents, supported by our security apparatus and government officials, helped to reduce tensions and maintain calmness,” President Boakai stated.
The President emphasized Liberia’s difficult past and the need to maintain stability while reiterating the nation’s commitment to peace and warning against any return to violence. “Liberia has learned from its past. There is nothing we gain from conflict, especially at a time when the world itself appears to be on fire,” he warned.
Additionally, President Boakai praised important stakeholders and government representatives who worked in the background to calm down the crisis through persistent community involvement and discreet diplomacy. He cited continuous international conflicts and their economic knock-on impacts, such as Liberia’s increased prices for products and services, as examples of more general global issues.
However, in order to protect themselves from outside shocks, the Liberian leader pushed the populace to concentrate on increasing internal productivity. The government’s most recent assessment indicates a cautious return to calm, with officials continuing to closely monitor developments, despite the fact that the situation at the Lofa border has garnered much national attention in recent days.
