Boakai reiterated dedication to empowering women.

New York, USA – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has reaffirmed his commitment to women’s empowerment. With an emphasis on social development, education, health care, youth empowerment, and gender equality, President Boakai declared during his speech at the Fourth World Conference on Women that Liberia will invest US$8.3 billion over five years under the Agenda for Inclusive Development to improve lives.

Boakai’s statements include a pledge to have no tolerance for gender-based violence, as well as financial support, public education, and awareness initiatives. He clarified that harmful cultural customs would be outlawed for good. What was once a three-year ban will now become national legislation due to national discussions and actions for alternative livelihoods.

“The implementation of a National Action Plan for Young Women and Girls will provide a roadmap for empowerment, voice, and protection. As Liberia starts its two-year term on the UN Security Council, we will ensure that the opinions of women and young people are not only heard but also have an impact on the agenda for women and youth peace and security.”

“Our programs are already changing lives. By reaching 36,000 businesswomen throughout 6 counties, the Liberia Women Empowerment Project is impacting over 260,000 Liberians through increased income, resilience, and growth.”
