Boakai To Print New Money

Convenes Legislative Session

Monrovia, Liberia – The 55th National Legislature has been called to a ten-day Special Session by President Joseph N. Boakai, with the projected printing of more Liberian dollar banknotes at the focus of a pressing national discussion. The President used Article 32(b) of the Constitution in a formal letter to House Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon dated April 7, 2026, to call a meeting of legislators from Thursday, April 9 to April 23, 2026, well in advance of their planned return in May.

The remarkable action highlights the Executive’s growing apprehension about the possible economic repercussions of increasing the money supply. Additionally, the plan to print more money has alarmed economists and policymakers, who caution that it would have an impact on public confidence in the Liberian dollar, inflation, and exchange rate stability.

“This session is convened to deliberate and act upon matters of urgent national concern, signaling the urgency surrounding the currency issue,” he added.

After concluding its first quarter agenda, the Legislature adjourned sine die on March 19. The Executive propose, however, that changes pertaining to monetary policy and liquidity issues demand quick legislative review. According to observers, the Special Session will be crucial for lawmakers as they consider the advantages and disadvantages of expanding the number of Liberian banknotes in circulation.

Critics warn that in the absence of strict monetary regulations, the step could lead to inflationary pressures and devalue the currency, while supporters contend that it could alleviate cash shortages and facilitate transactions. The President, however, emphasized the wide-ranging consequences of their choices and called on members of the House of Representatives to take bold action in the national interest.

“These proposals are time, sensitive and cannot await the resumption of the regular session,” the communication stressed.

All eyes will be on Capitol Hill as the session begins, as discussions regarding currency creation are anticipated to influence Liberia’s economic stability going forward.
