Monrovia, Liberia – President Joseph N. Boakai addressed hundreds of student leaders at the African Student Leadership Forum on Monday, November 24, 2025, at the Best Brains University Auditorium in Paynesville. He persuasively argued for solidarity, patriotism, and responsible leadership.
Students from the University of Liberia, Cuttington, AMEU, and community colleges in all fifteen counties were told by the Liberian leader that their attendance at the forum was an indication of future leadership, trust, and responsibility rather than an accident. In order to accommodate his attendance, his early morning travel plans had been altered.
President Boakai asked the young leaders to love, defend, and put Liberia above personal and political interests, speaking “as a father would speak to his children.” He cautioned that true patriotism is shown in deeds that create rather than destroy.
“Liberia is the only country we have. Put Liberia above every personal interest and every political interest,” he narrated.
Citing Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka, the President stressed the importance of responsibility in democracy but warned that criticism must be constructive. He bemoaned young Africans’ propensity to applaud politicians who steal their future.
Additionally, Boakai urged students to speak up in order to advance national discourse, foster togetherness, and offer answers. He emphasized that education is still the most effective way to mold Liberia’s future leaders—those who will eventually hold public office, manage organizations, and advance the country.
He emphasized the need of unity across tribes, counties, and generations by quoting the national song and reminding the crowd that “in union strong, success is sure.” The President also discussed his personal leadership lessons, characterizing them as sacrifice, humility, and service rather than a title.
“You have to be the generation that says enough about hatred, violence, and separation. Liberia will rise if you do,” Boakai said.
