Abuja, Nigeria – Nigeria President elect Bola Tinubu has finally been sworn into office after several controversy surrounding the 2023 elections. Bola Tinubu is Nigeria’s 16th leader since the country’s independence in 1960. He today Monday, May 29, 2023, was sworn in office along with his vice Kashim Shettima.
The ceremony took place at the Eagle Square, in Abuja. Tinubu succeeds President Muhammadu Buhari. On March 1, 2023, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate Tinubu was proclaimed the victor of the presidential election held on February 25, 2023, by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). After receiving 8,794,726 votes, he defeated the other 17 candidates that ran for office. Additionally, in more than 25 states, it is reported he received more than 25% of the vote.
His main rival, former vice president Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), received 6,984,520 votes, followed by Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP), a former governor of Anambra State, who received 6,101,533 votes, and Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), who received 1,496,687 votes.
According to reports, Tinubu presided over Lagos State, the nation’s economic center, from 1999 and 2007. Tinubu, an accountant by profession, previously held the office of senator under the brief Third Republic.
