Tubmanburg, Bomi County — President Joseph N. Boakai has inaugurated a newly refurbished maternity wing and triage unit at the Government Hospital in Tubmanburg, Bomi County, as part of an effort to strengthen Liberia’s healthcare system. The project, which was initiated and financed by First Lady Kartumu Yarta Boakai and partners, is a component of broader initiatives to improve the nation’s access to healthcare for mothers and children.

President Boakai praised the First Lady’s steadfast dedication to improving the welfare of Liberian women and children through real-world health sector interventions during a vibrant dedication ceremony that was attended by AfDB President Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, Second Lady Madam Synleseh Stephanie Dahn-Koung, senior government officials, local authorities, health workers, community leaders, and Bomi County residents.
“This center represents hope, care, and the importance we place on all Liberian lives, particularly those of our mothers and babies. It is more than simply a building. I applaud the First Lady for her vision and compassion that have brought this significant improvement to the people of Bomi,” President Boakai said.
Modern delivery beds, necessary medical equipment, better sanitary facilities, and more room for patient care are all features of the remodeled maternity ward and triage unit. It is anticipated that the improvements would lessen the strain on nearby health clinics and drastically lower the region’s rates of maternal and newborn deaths.
First Lady Kartumu Yarta Boakai stressed in her remarks the importance of preventing women from dying while giving birth. “Too many of our women still give birth in dangerous circumstances. This initiative is a first step in improving the safety and dignity of maternal health for our women.”
The First Lady further reaffirmed her commitment to partnering with communities and healthcare institutions across Liberia to continue supporting maternal and child health, especially in underserved counties. A tour of the building and a conversation with staff members who were appreciative of the change marked the end of the dedication.
The Boakai government was commended by the local authorities for giving people-centered development first priority. The Liberian government maintained that, it is still dedicated to bettering the country’s healthcare system and guaranteeing that every person has fair access to high-quality care.
