    As FAO Donates tart-Up Materials

Monrovia, Liberia – The University of Liberia’s (UL) College of Agriculture and Forestry has received vital startup supplies from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. The handing-over event took place on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, at the University’s Fendall campus in Louisiana, Montserrado County, according to a UL statement dated January 23, 2025.

The start-up materials are meant for the University of Liberia’s Para-veterinary Diploma Program.

“This event not only represents our collective commitment to expand veterinary education in Liberia, but it also highlights the critical relationship that exists between FAO, USAID, the University of Liberia, MOA, and other key stakeholders in upgrading animal health systems throughout the country,” said the Food and Agriculture Organization.

Aspiring veterinary professionals will graduate from the program with the knowledge and practical skills necessary to really impact their communities. Future veterinarians will be crucial to preserving food safety, enhancing animal health, and reducing the spread of zoonotic illnesses, all of which will benefit Liberia’s agricultural economy and populace.

The effort highlights a commitment to furthering education in agricultural and veterinary science, disciplines crucial to Liberia’s sustainable development, according to Prof. Dr. Layli Maparyan, President of the University of Liberia, who accepted the donation on behalf of the university.

“The para-veterinary diploma program represents a critical step in addressing the needs of our agricultural sector,” the president of UL said.

According to Dr. Maparyan, students who are given the tools and practical skills they need are more equipped to handle real-world problems, enhance animal health, and support the development of agricultural and livestock communities.

She added that the University of Liberia is certain that it will have an impact over the entire nation since it is a microcosm of the greater Liberian community.

She expressed her sincere appreciation to the FAO, the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA), and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) for their support of this outstanding endeavor, as well as to UL’s partners and stakeholders.

Hedd-Williams spoke on behalf of the Technical Department of the MoA and expressed their sincere appreciation to the FAO for this kind assistance as well as to the veterinary activities spearheaded by the FAO’s Emergency Center for Transboundary Animal Diseases (ECTAD) for supporting this effort.

Madam Hedd-Williams said that the gesture signifies trust in the capabilities of the University of Liberia and a belief in the power of education to transform lives and communities.
