Monrovia, Liberia – Mulbah Morlu, a human rights activist and the immediate former chairman of the Coalition for Democratic Change, founded the pro-democracy organization “STAND” to combat social injustice and impunity.
Launched on Sunday, March 17, 2024, at the PHP Park in Monrovia, the acronym STAND stands for “Taking a stand for the voiceless” and represents Solidarity and Trust for a New Day.
Speaking shortly after being named National Chairman by a coalition of civic and social organizations, Mr. Morlu said, STAND has no allegiance to any political party, not even the Unity Party or the CDC.
He emphasized that the movement’s goal is to upend the existing quo by speaking up for the weak, the voiceless, and those in need not to sympathize with “Business as Usual.”
According to Mr. Morlu, there is an urgent need for civil society engagement because of the people’s declining trust during the Weah-led government and the rising domestic cynicism surrounding public policy decision-making during the Boakai administration.
The movement’s leaders urged the Liberian Senate to cooperate with the House of Representatives in creating a War and Economic Crimes Court, which would bring serious charges against senior offenders of heinous crimes, in order to serve the interests of the country.
Supporters, civil society organizations, and numerous other Liberians widely publicized the launch.
