The Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission’s Executive Chairperson, Cllr. Edwin Kla Martin has called for the National Legislature to pass a new law creating a specialized court for the prosecution of corrupt public officials and private individuals held accountable for corrupt offenses. Cllr. Martin lamented that fighting corruption in the country requires significant effort and bravery.
He calmed that the fight against corruption in Liberia is not an easy task. Cllr. Martin disclosed that LACC under his watch has forwarded more corruption cases to the Ministry of Justice and his Institution has generated more funds and sent to government revenue and it is the highest since the establishment of the institution years ago. The LACC Boss noted that It is important to strengthen all sectors of society in order to collectively declared a massive war against corruption across the country.
According to him, corruption is a risky recipe that can thwart and undermine any country’s efforts to grow and develop. As a result, Liberians in the modern era must take responsibility for making sure that corruption is not tolerable, encouraged, used, or maintained at any level of political governance.
The Institution has undertaken five assessments of the country’s corruption risk this year, according to Cllr. Martin. He named the Liberia Immigration Service, Liberia National Police, Liberia Electricity Corporation, National Watch Commission, and the National Identification Registrary.
The Liberia Telecommunications Authority, The National Road Funds, The Liberia Petroleum, and Refining Company, and the Ministry of Commerce and Industrial are among the institutions still awaiting risk assessments, he noted.
Despite the many difficulties the institution faces, he pledged to uphold its reputation and to ensure that the conclusions of the upcoming assessment are made public. He made the accession Friday, December 9, 2022, at a program marking the International Anti-Corruption day held at the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Ministerial Complex in Congo Town. Cllr. Martin spoke on the theme “Uniting against Corruption”
