CONGRATULATES AMB. BOAKAI ON WINNING 2023 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION
Monrovia, Liberia – President George Manneh Weah is commended by the human rights community and the Civil Society Human Rights Advocacy Platform (CSHRA-P) for accepting defeat and extending congratulations to Amb. Joseph Nyumah Boakai, the newly elected president of the Republic of Liberia. The president’s unusual decision to give in and congratulate his opponent in the recently concluded presidential rerun marks a departure from other autocratic African regimes that hold onto power at the expense of their citizens.
The human rights community and CSO Platform extend their congratulations to Amb. Joseph Nyumah Boakai, the president-elect, on his triumph in the recently concluded November 2023 Presidential Election run-off. According to a release from the human rights community, they are still confident that the new administration will take the required actions to address the problems with inclusive government, the protection and promotion of human rights, holding past offenders accountable, giving priority to the needs of people with disabilities, drug addiction, unemployment, healthcare, and the state’s basic needs.
In addition, the CSO Platform commends the National Election Commission for organizing the 2023 presidential and legislative elections in a transparent and impartial manner despite significant obstacles.
They said the recent poll results have renewed the people of Liberia’s hopes and dreams that the nation’s public institutions remain honest, and they have called on other institutions, such as the police and court, to follow NEC’s lead.
A statement from the CSO Human Rights Advocacy Platform of Liberia, signed by National Secretary General Adama K. Dempster, praised the people of Liberia for their composure and peaceful conduct throughout the recently concluded election processes. The human rights community and the CSO Platform acknowledge that people chose sides during the election process, but now that it’s over, it’s important to prioritise the needs of the nation over self interest.
