AS HE TAKES OVER FINANCE MINISTRY AS MINISTER
Monrovia, Liberia – The new Finance Minister of Liberia, Augustine K. Ngafuan, has urged Ministry of Finance and Development Planning (MFDP) staff members to act in the best interests of the people.
Speaking Monday, September 16, 2024, at the turnover ceremony of Minister Nyafuan at the Ministry of Finance in Monrovia, the new Finance Minister said, it is the responsibility of MFDP via its employees to deliver the ambition of the people of Liberia; adding that it is also the duty of the Finance Ministry to fulfill the ambitious of the people that go beyond electoral cycle.
“We are not the most productive, it’s an honor. The consequences of failing could lead to the death of people. Because of our inactions, we become murderers before even thinking that we are murderers, it feels vindicated.”
The Minister called on employees to focus on knowing and doing their jobs, stating that he would promote a performance culture so that employees would not worship the politicians, but rather do their jobs.
According to him, as Finance Minister, he will look at three main qualities, which include qualification, competence, and integrity. The Finance Minister indicated that employees must deliberately be robust to grow the budget.
“The Ministry is like the heart of the government. We pump the blood and we must supply it on time. We don’t want paralysis. We must prioritize our priorities.”
Minister Ngafuan narrated that since his appointment by President Joseph N. Boakai, the expectations of Liberians have been very high. Having held the same post during the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf regime, he praised President Boakai for choosing him as Liberia’s Finance Minister.
For his part, than Acting Finance Minister Anthony Myers called on Minister Ngafuan to give worker motivation and workspace enhancement a priority at MFDP. Minister Myers said the first thing Minister Ngafuan should focus on is the operational effectiveness and efficiency of the Ministry, he added that what counts most is the input and consequence of good performance. He added that he looks forward to an increasing availability of including the budget module.
