Nigeria – A major step to lower the cost of air travel throughout the West African region has been taken by the heads of state and government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
From 1 January 2026, all ECOWAS Member States will abolish air transport taxes and reduce passenger and security charges by 25 percent, in line with a Supplementary Act on Aviation Charges, Taxes and Fees, according to a release issued by Ecowas – Cedeao
According to the statement, this decision was made in response to long-standing worries about the high cost of flying in West Africa, which has hampered trade, tourism, and the free flow of people and products.
Through a Regional Air Transport Economic Oversight Mechanism, the ECOWAS Commission will oversee the measures’ implementation. Lower airfares, more passengers, stronger regional carriers, and deeper regional integration are the anticipated results.
