Monrovia, Liberia – Alieu Touray, the President of the Economic Community of West Africa States Commission (ECOWAS), has revealed that he is not in Liberia as a result of a message received from Liberia’s Former President and Political Leader of Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), George Manneh Weah, to ECOWAS.
In an interview with reporters on Tuesday, August 27, 2024, following his meeting with President Joseph N. Boakai at the Executive Mansion in Monrovia, the President of the ECOWAS Commission stated that he intended to travel to Liberia following a few meetings in Nairobi, Kenya, with Dr. Ibrahim Al-Bakri Nyei, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs before receiving communication from the CDC.
“This visit follows my previous conversations with the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs in Nairobi, Kenya, where I informed him of my intention to travel to Liberia.”
“We have come to congratulate the people of Liberia for the peaceful transaction that has taken place in the country, which remains a major achievement for the citizens as well as the region. Second, we are here to reiterate the ECOWAS’s pledge to assist Liberia.”
Following the discussion between President Boakai and the ECOWAS high power delegation, Touray also gave the Liberian president his word that the organization will continue to work toward economic growth, democratic consolidation, and the peace and security of Liberia.
Kula Fofana, the Presidential Press Secretary for Liberia, stated that President Boakai told the ECOWAS delegation at the meeting that Liberia is committed to maintaining the peace that the nation possesses.
Reporters were informed by Madam Fofana that President Boakai gave ECOWAS assurances that his government is still committed to ensuring peace in Liberia and that every citizen will be included in the new Liberia that he is attempting to establish.
According to Kula, the President assured the ECOWAS delegation that he will achieve his goals of accountability, transparency, and reconciliation in line with his ARREST agenda in a span of two years.
The Liberian Leader claimed that all of the policies implemented by his administration are meant to make Liberia a better place for all Liberians, not to single out any particular party or individual, the press secretary added.
But according to the presidential press secretary, the ECOWAS delegation revealed during the conference that the group had received a message from the CDC.
However, President Boakai told the delegation that the greeting had nothing to do with what was going on in response to the letter.
The President further stated that the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) conducted a search and seizure operation surrounding the CDC Headquarters, and that his administration had no intention of pursuing any individuals.
