Monrovia, Liberia – More than sixty-five school-age children from 10 West Point schools have received scholarships from the Beatrice Wleh Scholarship Foundation. With the slogan “Educating Girls through unification,” the group was formally founded on Saturday at West Point Township with the goal of removing educational obstacles for school-age children in the West Point neighborhood.
Speaking during the opening of its Scholarship Fund campaign, Cyrus Blay, Country Director of the Beatrice Foundation, stated that the program’s goal is to help the Township of West Point poor school-age children.
Only children in the West Point neighborhood are eligible for the program, according to the Country Director, who also mentioned that they now have 65 students from other 20 schools they collaborate with.
According to Blay, the organization has committed to taking the scholarship recipients on a tour to see historic locations across the nation, including ministries and agencies. The purpose of the visitation is to help the students develop an open mind in order to make important decisions about their future careers.
He narrated that the foundation is planning to expand it’s program and includ kids with disabilities in the next batch. “By next year, we will extend the program to include disabled children whose parents cannot afford. We are aiming to expand the program to include additional mentorship and vocational training skills in addition to paid tuition,” Blay maintained.
At the same time, Thomas Tweh, the Foundation’s National Coordinator, urged parents to let their children choose their ideal career rather than forcing it into their heads.
The guest speaker, Hon. Cornelia Kruah, Deputy Minister of State for Presidential Affairs, was represented by Barkue Sayee, who urged parents to take their children’s education serious, stating that it is not just the school’s responsibility. Sayee conveyed his appreciation to the Foundation staff for their social endeavor.
One of the beneficiaries’ parents, Cecliea Blamo, also thanked the organization team for taking the initiative at the event and suggested that the team broaden the program.
Prominent members of the Westpoint community, kids, the township commissioner, parents, and school officials were among those who attended the presentation.
