Monrovia, Liberia – Commerce Minister Magdalene Dagoseh has started a statewide investigation to make sure the revised prices declared by Liberian leader Joseph N. Boakai are being applied correctly, in response to his directive to reduce rice.
“So, in response to President Joseph Boakai’s order to lower the prices of rice and other necessities, I am heading a nationwide inspection beginning today to make sure that these new prices are appropriately applied,” the Minister stated.
She stated that the Ministry’s actions are intended to shield customers from unjust prices and ensure that basic necessities are within the means of every household. Anyone found to be overcharging will face severe repercussions, the commerce minister explained during the inspection.
“We will be visiting markets, shops, and suppliers across the country. Anyone found overcharging will face serious consequence. Together, we can create a fair and transparent market that works for all Liberians. I ask for your support and cooperation during this important process,” Minister Dagoseh stated.
Following the findings and proposal of the Presidential Ad-Hoc Committee on Price Contradictions, which was chaired by Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung, Boakai announced major price reductions for rice and flour on September 2, 2025.
Before, the wholesale price of flour was US$39.00 per 100-lb bag; the President said it is now US$35.00 per 100-lb bag. Similarly, the cost of rice has decreased from US$16.75 per 25 kg bag to US$14.00 per 25 kg bag.
“These reductions represent my government’s commitment to ensuring that the ordinary Liberian family has access to affordable food,” President Boakai said.
He also disclosed that the government is collaborating with importers and producers to uphold sustainable and equitable trade policies that ensure steady supply. The President has also directed the Ministry of Commerce inspectorates and all other pertinent parties to make sure that the new pricing are strictly enforced throughout the nation.
He issued a warning, saying that any person or company found to be implementing unjustified price hikes will be subject to the full force of the law.
