Monrovia, Liberia – In a tribute to the late Muhammadu Buhari, the former president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, former Liberian President George Manneh Weah called him a “steadfast partner” and a “pillar of stability” in Liberia’s democratic path.
In a statement released from Monrovia on Sunday, July 13, Amb. Weah recalled the late Nigerian leader’s pivotal role in assisting Liberia’s post-war transition and regional peace initiatives. He expressed profound regret over Buhari’s departure. After his historic victory in 2015, which demonstrated the resilience of Nigeria’s democracy, he emerged as a pillar of stability in the region, according to Weah.
George Weah, the president of Liberia from 2018 until 2024, gave Buhari credit for assisting in the country’s democratic transition in 2017. He emphasized how Buhari has played a crucial role in bolstering Liberia’s democratic institutions and promoting peace efforts throughout West Africa.

“I remember our several cordial exchanges, both bilateral and multilateral. He was an unwavering ally on Liberia’s road to healing. His longstanding contributions to Nigerian politics will serve as a sobering reminder of the nation’s tenacity and democratic advancement,” Weah remarked.
The former Liberian leader sent his condolences to Buhari’s family as well as to the Nigerian government and populace. “May his soul rest in peace.”
