Monrovia, Liberia – Hours after President Joseph N. Boakai informed the world that he called former Presidents on National Unification Day as a way of engage one another, ex President George Manneh Weah said that he has not spoken to President Boakai since January 2024.

“I have not spoken to President Boakai since January, 2024,” former President Weah stated.

In his response to President Boakai, May 14, 2025, Weah narrated, “Earlier this morning, I received a missed call from an unknown number, which was followed by a text message from President Joseph Boakai wishing me a happy Unification Day and urging national unity.”

According to the former President, he responded to the message by also wishing President Boakai a happy Unification Day. In his message to the President, Weah iterate that true unification is not based on superficial political gimmicks, but on the rule of law and constitutional order.

Liberia’s ex President also urged Boakai to respect the rule of law, respect past and present political leaders, and uphold the sanctity of our hard-fought democratic institutions and processes in order to foster national unification.

In his Unification Day speech to Liberians on May 14, 2025, President Boakai stated that unification is not a catchphrase that should be practiced once a year. The Liberian leader clarified that unity must become ingrained in society, manifested in the way the government interacts with its constituents, governs, and handles problems.

According to Pres. Boakai, Liberians must face economic hardship, climatic shocks, and the great aspirations of the youth as a single people, united by a common history and motivated by a shared future.

“It was squarely within such frame of mind that I, earlier today, placed special goodwill telephone calls to former Presidents Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and George Manneh Weah as well as eminent national leaders Benoni Wilfred Urey, Alexander Benedict Cummings,” the President added.

According to Boakai, he also reached out to the Liberia Council of Churches and the National Muslim Council of Liberia as well as the Chairman of the National Council of Chiefs and Elders of Liberia; adding that it is his own way of forging the spirit of unification and inclusion, assuring all that our doors remain open for any meaningful engagement that will help our hands in nation building.
