First Lady Kartumu Boakai Encourages Women to Put Their Health First

Calls For Breast Cancer Awareness

Monrovia, Liberia – A nationwide call to action for breast cancer awareness has been issued by Liberia’s First Lady Kartumu Yarta Boakai, who additionally encouraged women and girls to put their health first by getting regular clinical screenings and self-examinations. Madam Boakai also emphasized the importance of teamwork in effectively battling the illness.

The First Lady described a two-pronged approach that emphasizes both individual accountability and community assistance while speaking at her Executive Mansion office on Friday, October 10, when she gave a check as a first financial gift to the Liberia Cancer Resources Initiatives, or LCRI.

“Your health is your top responsibility, and I’m encouraging all women, sisters, mothers, and daughters to take charge of their own health.”

Nonetheless, the First Lady of Liberia recommended everywoman to conduct their monthly self-assessments. “Don’t disregard any changes that have occurred. Attend a clinical screening. Silence lacks strength, while proactive care has tremendous power.”

According to her, the battle against breast cancer is not limited to clinical settings; it also takes place in the homes, communities, and hearts. The First Lady also urged local leaders to act as pillars of solidarity. She said, “Let’s educate ourselves and foster an atmosphere where women feel encouraged to seek care rather than stigmatized.”

Madam Boakai reiterated her dedication to promoting improved healthcare awareness and services throughout Liberia.

Speaking as well, Dr. Zuleku Woods, Director of Research at LCRI, praised the First Lady’s leadership and emphasized the importance of Her Excellency’s voice and assistance to the campaign.

The campaign supports this year’s theme, “Early detection saves lives: empower women, educate communities,” and is in line with the global commemoration of October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
