Former President Weah credit wife recounts a near-miss

Monrovia, Liberia – In response to the recent fire disaster at his home on 9th Street, former Liberian President George Manneh Weah has spoken out and credited his wife, Clar Marie Weah, who made a choice that saved their lives.

Speaking at the Forky Klon Jlaleh Family Fellowship Church on Sunday, September 28, Amb. Weah thanked God for what he called “divine protection.”

“We will sleep in Rehab tonight; we will not sleep on 9th Street,” my wife informed me after I arrived in Liberia. “I listened to her and remained silent. sadly I later received a call informing me that my home on 9th Street had burned down. I immediately said, “Glory be to God,” to the individual.

It’s still unknown what caused the fire on September 24. It is reported that the Liberia National Fire Service (LNFS) acknowledged receiving the initial report at 12:48 a.m. and promptly sent out units from Station One, followed by backup teams and an ambulance. By 1:20 am, firefighters had contained the fire, and at 2:03 am, they left.

Investigators claim they were subsequently refused permission to perform a thorough post-fire assessment. According to a statement released by LNFS, its team was denied entry to the house and was informed that they will be contacted “if needed,” but that call has not yet materialized.

Mr. Weah’s party, the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), has called the fire a national security issue. The former president’s bedroom was damaged by the fire, according to party leader Janga Kowo, who also demanded an impartial, international forensic investigation.
