Monrovia, Liberia – Former Liberian President George Manneh Weah’s house on 9th Street was destroyed by a late-night fire on Wednesday. Weah himself requested help, and residents rushed in. According to witnesses, neighbors helped quench the fire before the Liberia Fire Service arrived.
On the spot, Janga Kowo, the acting chairman of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), said the fire allegedly began in the former president’s bedroom. “It’s so concerning that we’re trying to determine what went wrong. We’re discussing the former president’s bedroom. He described the extent of the damage inside the house as destructive.”
Although media were not permitted to enter the compound, Kowo affirmed that the former president was safe. Later, an ambulance and fire engines were observed departing the vicinity.
After learning about the occurrence, former Speaker Fonati Koffa, former Foreign Minister Maxwell Kemayah, Former Montserrado County Representative Acarous Gray, and former Minister of State Nathaniel McGill including others rushed to the site.
The fire occurred barely two days after Weah was warmly welcomed at Roberts International Airport upon his arrival back in Liberia on Monday. The official cause of the fire has not yet been revealed by authorities.
