Monrovia, Liberia – Former warlord, now preacher of the gospel and humanitarian, Joshua Milton Blahyi, allias General Butt Naked caution major opposition political party leaders in the country to support President Boakai quest in establishing the war and economic crime courts.
Evangelist Blahyi said the establishment of the court will bring a great sense of release to the family members of the war victims.
Speaking at a news conference Thursday, February 29, 2024, in Monrovia, evangelist Blahyi strongly disagreed with citizens who are on the verge of giving up their quest for the establishment of the War and Economic Crime Court in the country.
He argued that Liberians who participated in the civil conflict in the country should not go with impunity, but they should give an account of their actions.
According to Blahyi, the establishment of the Court will abolish the impunity culture and serve as a warning to anyone thinking about using violence against the government. He added that although the court’s establishment is important, political party leaders, especially those in the 55th Legislature, ought to support President Boakai in getting the court established since it will help the country grow and develop and have certain economic advantages.
He pointed out that some citizens still live with trima as a result of their parents’ deaths prior to them during the conflict. “When the court is established, no Liberian will have the courage to bring war here or to protest on behalf of a warlord.”
Evangelist Blahyi’s statement comes amid a leak of audio with President Joseph Boakai and Allen White, the lead campaigners for the establishment of the war and economic crime courts in the country. The war, which lasted from 1989 to 2003, claimed 250,000 lives—men, women, and children. A million people left the country, and up to 20,000 children were recruited as soldiers across the country.
