GoL, China break ground for the construction of US$36.6M overpass bridges.

Congo Town, Monrovia – The Liberian government and the People’s Republic of China have begun construction of two overpass bridges in Liberia, which cost US$36.6 million. The two overpass bridges, which are situated at the crossroads of Tubman Boulevard Avenue and the Oldest Congo Town and the Capitol of Monrovia, are a project of the Chinese government.

The US$36.6 million project include, roadbed engineering, pavement engineering, bridge and culvert engineering, draining engineering, safety facility engineering, etc. With the scope of the route, the actual length of the route is 2.107 kilometers, divided into two parts, East Interchange and West Interchange, with the main corridor reconstruction at 967 meter; new auxiliary road at 1,134 meter and and overpass length exterminated at 183 meter.

The project, which is anticipated to take 24 months (September 2025 to August 2027), will significantly improve traffic conditions, make people’s daily travels much more convenient, and strengthen Liberia-China cooperation.

President Joseph N. Boakai clarified during the ceremony in Congo Town on Tuesday, August 2, 2025, that the bridges are workable ways to lessen traffic accidents and financial losses. The Liberian leader highlighted how road building can save expenses, shorten travel times, and boost economic growth.

He stated that building the overpass bridges will help improve traffic control and cut down on travel time during rush hour. As part of the project’s goal. He added that jobs and local possibilities will be created. The Liberian leader called on contractors to maintain strict safety, quality, and local involvement criteria.

Additionally, President Boakai asked for the public’s cooperation and patience while addressing the short-term disruptions that the construction may cause. Addressing the audience, Boakai demanded that the project be carried out transparently and asked the media to cover the difficulties and procedures encountered during the building phase.

Ambassador Yin Chengwu emphasized the project’s importance as a major result of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation’s 2024 Beijing Summit, where Presidents Xi Jinping and Boakai upgraded bilateral relations to a strategic partnership.

“Despite the thousands of miles separating China and Liberia, our hearts are very close. These flyovers are bridges of friendship and win-win cooperation in addition to being bridges of transportation,” the ambassador stated.

In keeping with China’s dedication to quality and openness, Ambassador Chengwu highlighted that the contractor, China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), was chosen through an open and competitive bidding process. Along with improving the country’s transportation and economic capabilities, he promised that the project will be finished in 24 months and provide “tangible benefits to the Liberian public.”

Roland L. Giddings, the Public Works Minister, acknowledged China’s steadfast dedication to Liberia’s infrastructure development and thanked the People’s Republic of China for funding the project through a grant. According to Minister Gidding, the groundbreaking event serves as an extension of the Ministry of Public Works’ and former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf’s mission to improve transportation and alleviate traffic congestion.

With a call for shared responsibility throughout construction to ensure timely delivery and good standards, he said the project, which is estimated to produce 150 to 300 jobs, represents the strengthening of the relationship between Liberia and China. The Ministed named several Chinese-funded infrastructure projects, including the Fender Campus of the University of Liberia, the Tapita hospital, and the diagnostic center, which led to the overpass bridges.

The project will help to cut down on traffic and travel time on one of Monrovia’s busiest roadways. Medical facilities, educational institutions, and businesses will all benefit from the free flow of traffic. It will also provide jobs and training opportunities for Liberians during and after the construction. Better traffic flow and pedestrian safety elements will result in fewer traffic accidents.
