Buchanan City, Geand Bassa – In a major step toward developing industrial agriculture and generating new job possibilities, the Liberian government has formally started construction on an innovative $19.4 million Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zone (SAPZ) in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County.
President Joseph Nyuma Boakai was represented at the ceremony on Friday, May 23, 2025, by Vice President Hon. Jeremiah Kpan Koung. He formally gave the Liberia Special Economic Zone Authority (LSEZA) the official deed for the 200-hectare property at the occasion.
President Joseph Boakai’s ARREST Agenda, which aims to boost rural economic growth and revitalize Liberia’s agriculture sector, includes the SAPZ initiative as a major element.
The Liberia Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zone seeks to industrialize the nation’s agriculture industry while generating long-term employment opportunities for local populations. When the project is finished, investors will want to establish factories and processing facilities that will make locally grown commodities more valuable.
Vice President Koung was upbeat in his remarks, saying, “This is a new chapter for Liberian farmers. He claims that the creation of this zone would enable our agricultural industry to reach its maximum potential by offering the resources and chances required to process and export Liberian goods on a large scale.
Representatives Thomas Alexander Goshua, Matthew Fairplay Joe, Clarence Banks, and Alfred Flomo were among the Grand Bassa County politicians who spoke and commended President Boakai’s dedication to rural development.
For his part, Grand Bassa County Acting Superintendent James Duen said the project would provide lasting opportunities for residents who have long struggled with limited employment options.
