Monrovia, Liberia – A recently published article headlined “Liberia Selected as One of Trump’s ‘Dumpsite’ Countries for Criminals and Illegal Immigrants” has been completely rejected by the Liberian government in terms of its substance, tone, and aim. The article provides a wildly skewed narrative that misrepresents the bilateral collaboration between the United States and Liberia, and it has spread throughout various media platforms according to the Liberian government.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs positively declare that the Liberian government has not engaged in any discussions or negotiations concerning the transfer of third-party nationals from the United States to Liberia. Noting that there are no current talks over third-party nationals, Liberia has also not signed any official or informal agreements requiring it to accept non-Liberian nationals.
However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairsin caution the public against falling for false and misleading information and to request that the relevant media refrain from damaging themselves by publishing reports based on unfounded and misleading assertions.
To avoid a travel restriction, the Liberian government said, it is working with the US on the necessary measures to resolve the country’s concerns. Court documents, affidavits, birth certificates, and other fake documents are frequently presented to the US Embassy. There are also problems with the tardy prosecution of these fraudulent cases which the US also raised.
Additionally, because of Liberia’s high overstay rate, overstay concerns are a top priority. The US government and the government of Liberia are engaged on this and a number of other concerns. According to the foreign ministry, “we want to keep working together to solve these issues comprehensively in order to prevent travel bans for Liberians to the US.”
Since overstay is deducted from the length of visit that the applicant stated during the interview or visa request, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs encourages all Liberians, including those living abroad, to abide by US regulations and cooperate in order to guarantee that Liberians who travel to the US return within the time frame specified during their visa interviews.
“We will be educating the public more to make sure Liberians are aware of the consequences of presenting false documents and information to the US government, as well as what overstay means.”
