Monrovia, Liberia – An agreement worth 42 million dollars has been strucked by the Liberian government, the World Bank, France, and Sweden in an effort to improve vulnerable people’s access to income-generating possibilities in 14 of the 15 sub-political regions of Liberia. Samuel Tweah, Liberia Finance Miniter signed on behalf of the Liberian government. The agreement was also signed by Michael Roux, French ambassador to Liberia, Mark Capehart Acting World Bank Country Manager, and Urban Siostrain, Swedish ambassador to Liberia.
Speaking at the signing event, Mark Mulbah, World Bank Acting Country Manager reaffirmed the commitment of the international community to enhancing the standard of living in the nation. According to Mr. Mulbah, the project would assist in supplying disadvantaged, underprivileged, and food insecure households with livelihood support in both urban and rural locations.
The development of community livelihoods in rural Liberia would be the primary focus of some of the project’s funding, according to French Ambassador Michael Moux. The French Ambassador emphasized that this will also include the payment of wages for work done to increase food production, support for community development initiatives, and assistance for local cooperatives.
In his speech, Swedish Ambassador Urban Siostrain emphasized his nation’s commitment to tackling some of the issues facing Liberia’s common people. According to him, Sweden’s contribution to enhancing the standard of life for the general populace is evidence of his nation’s commitment to work with other nations to address some of the issues hindering development and raising the cost of living.
Finance Minister Samuel Tweah thanked the World Bank, France, and Sweden for their financial donation intended to improve the living conditions of the needy people. He claimed that the agriculture sector, which employs many Liberians in rural areas, will receive the lion’s share of the funds for this initiative.
Minister Tweah noted that his ministry is working on a project proposal to raise money for loans for the thousands of street vendors who do not have access to loans from banks.
Senior officials from the Ministries of Finance, Justice, and Youth attended the signing event, which was place on the tenth floor of the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning.
