The Liberia Labor Congress alarms celebrating their International Labor Day in the absence of Liberian government representations, even though they claim to send out official invitations.
Celebrating their event at their Garnesville headquarters in Monrovia, The President General of the Congress Mr. Moibah K. Johnson called for stronger partnerships within their tripartite arrangement, the Government, Chamber of Commerce, and Workers so as to effectively mitigate the anomalies occurring within the labor arena in Liberia.
” President George M. Weah was invited to present the International Labor day message, The Chamber of Commerce, Ministry of Labor, House Committee on Labor, and the Senate Committee on Labor were all invited but are not present so we can’t read our proclamations” the Liberia Labor Congress noted at the program.
According to him, on their principles to promote international Labor best practices, they are tasked with the responsibility to ensure a society of an organized Labour environment that must encourage and indicate all workers without distinction, ranging from the public and private to the informal sectors of the economy.
Meanwhile, they pointed out that the wave of secret killings around the Country, sometimes involving workers and their families, with not a single culprit arrested, constant power outages at the Roberts International Airport, lack of basic affordable health care services, the failure of government to regulate the cost of basic commodities as well as the flooding of substandard goods on the Liberia market, are the sufficient reason for their concerns.
” If the workers rights must be given serious attention, it is time trade Unions stand firm in unity or in Union solidarity to engage the government for better wages and improve working conditions and we must also unite to engage our employer body to be much more open and transparent as they deal with workers”, the President of the Congress emphasized.
He acknowledged workers to take interest in protecting their rights as provided for within their local and international legal framework instruments in the world of work and in the society.
He added , on glorious May Day (May 1) of every year, workers represented by Unions and individual workers institutions globally, converged to commemorate the death, struggles and continuous fight to ensure the promotion of workers’ rights and to foster universal trade unionism.
Mr. Moibah K. Johnson encouraged his members to be guided by international trade union best practices, while at the same time taking into cognizance universal instruments and the International Labour Standards that concern workers as well as Trade Unions.
