Monrovia, Liberia – The National Elections Commission has declared that on January 25, 2024, a rerun between the two opposing candidates from the 2023 legislative general elections will take place in Maryland County’s Electoral District #2 at Precinct Code 27020, Old Sodaken Town Hall.
NEC claims that the Maryland County rerun is based on a directive from the Supreme Court of Liberia, which said in its ruling that a recount or rerun is necessary. It is known that the Supreme Court overturned the NEC Board of Commissioners’ decision in the Maryland County case involving Bhofal Chambers and Anthony Williams.
The High Court ordered a rerun of the ballots at two polling places in District #2, Pleebo Sodoken, under extreme security. Repeating the ruling of its hearing officer to deny the appeal of House Speaker Bhofal Chambers, the court ordered two polling places in Maryland County’s District #2 to be rerun with armed security guards in attendance.
As it did in District Number 2 of Maryland County, the Supreme Court declared in its ruling that in cases where election violence is evident, a rerun or recount is necessary. As per the statement, the Old Sodaken Town Hall precinct in Maryland County is up for rerun. The campaign kicks off on Wednesday, January 17, 2024, and runs until Wednesday, January 23, 2024.
The Commission extended an invitation to all interested parties, local and foreign observers, and the media to attend the rerun in Maryland County as well as the recount in Nimba.
