Monrovia, Liberia – A group under the banner InfoQuest-Liberia has praised the government of Liberia on the submission of the Ministry of Local Government bill of 2021 to the National legislature of Liberia for the approval of the Revenue Sharing Law Regulation.
The Executive Director of Info-Quest Liberia, Matthias M. Yeanay, revealed during a press conference on Monday, May 6, 2024, at the institution’s head office on the Oldroad, that President Boakai’s submission of the Ministry of Local Government bill of 2021 to the National legislature of Liberia is an indication of his political will to fulfill his government’s commitment to promote development.
According to him, the Ministry of Local Government has a number of objectives. These include supporting the 2012-adopted strategic roadmap for national healing, peacebuilding, and reconciliation as well as providing effective leadership for the Local Government Act of 2018 and the National Policy on Decentralization and Local Governance of 2011.
He said the Ministry of Local Government will be responsible for a number of important tasks. It will offer executive supervision, coaching, and direction to all municipal governments nationwide. Its areas of interest include Ensuring good governance practices like popular participation, inclusivity, transparency, accountability, and access to justice at the local level; Boundary harmonization; Strengthening social service delivery; Preserving cultural and traditional practices; Promoting peace and reconciliation; and Community farming and research.
Info-Quest Liberia’s Executive Director further stated that all local governments nationwide will receive executive oversight, mentorship, and direction from the Ministry of Local Government.
Its areas of focus include: communal farming and research; boundary harmonization; preserving cultural and traditional practices; bolstering social service delivery; fostering peace and reconciliation; and guaranteeing good governance practices at the local level, such as popular participation, inclusivity, accountability, transparency, and access to justice.
“In carrying out these tasks, the Ministry will adhere to the Local Government Act of 2018 and all relevant laws, policies, strategies, and regulations related to local governance and peace building.”
However, the group, through its Executive Director, requests that the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning reach an agreement on the approval of the Revenue Sharing Act Regulation with the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Governance Commission, the Land Authority, the Liberia Revenue Authority, and other important government ministries and agencies.
