Monrovia, Liberia – The Liberia Internet Governance Forum (IGF) present the Internews Roundtable Policy Session, a significant sub-theme event during Liberia Internet Governance Week 2024. Important stakeholders convened at an event on August 28, 2024, with an emphasis on “Media Law, Data Protection, and National Cybersecurity Strategy,” to deliberate on critical policy issues.
The Liberia IGF 2024 in its fifth year of existence, having been revived in 2020 and hosted by the Ministry of Posts & Telecommunications and the Liberia Telecommunication Authority. This year’s forum promises to be unlike any other, with an expanded week-long event focused on boosting digital cooperation and strengthening multistakeholder partnerships for internet governance.
Peterking Quaye, the Republic of Liberia’s National Convener & Coordinator, emphasized his excitement about the forum this year, “We anticipate that the Liberia IGF 2024 will be our most significant event to date. We are dedicated to bringing together all relevant parties for a meaningful conversation about the future of internet governance in Liberia, including the public and commercial sectors, academia, and civil society. A key component of our conversations center around the Internews Roundtable Policy Session, which cover important subjects including cybersecurity, data protection, and media law.”
Jeff Massah served as the moderator for a panel of experts during the Internews Roundtable Policy Session. The goal of the event was to give attendees a thorough understanding of the potential and difficulties pertaining to media legislation, digital rights, and improving national cybersecurity in Liberia.
In a conversation, USAID Internews’ Lien Bech, the country manager, offered her thoughts on the partnership, saying: “Internews is thrilled to sponsor and participate in the Liberia IGF 2024. An essential venue for addressing Liberia’s changing digital governance environment is this conference. Our collaboration is a testament to our dedication to advancing cybersecurity, upholding digital rights, and encouraging transparency. A wide range of seminars, panel discussions, and networking opportunities will be included in the Liberia IGF 2024, which will conclude with a thorough declaration of findings and suggestions. The goal of the event is to continue to grow from the previous year’s success and establish itself as the leading internet policy event in Liberia according to Peterking Quaye.
Every year, a variety of stakeholders get together to discuss and influence the direction of internet governance in Liberia during the Liberia Internet Governance Forum. The forum has been a vital venue for discussion, cooperation, and policy creation since its resuscitation in 2020.
