200 BAGS OF 25kg RICE AND 50 BAGS OF BEANS
Monrovia – In an effort to stem the rising tide of hunger at the prison, the former Honorary Consul General of India to Liberia, Mr. Upjit Singh Sachdeva, has agreed to donate 200 bags of rice and 50 bags of beans to the inmates at the Monrovia Central Prison.
The largest and most crowded jail in Liberia is the Monrovia Central Prison. Currently, the jail institution houses about 1500 inmates. In the earlier part of last week, Justice Minister Frank Musa Dean informed the house of legislature that prisoners at the prison institution were consuming “dry rice” as a result of the severe financial challenges the Monrovia Central Prison was facing. He made these claims during a public hearing on the draft national budget for 2023 that was held in front of the National Legislature.
Mr. Jeety revealed that he will give the prison center 200 bags of grains and 50 bags of beans on Tuesday, February 14, 2023. The Indian Businessman is noted for his monthly hot cooked meal at the prison facility and other prison centers and hospitals in Liberia.
Inviting other business institutions to follow suit, According to Mr. Sachdeva, additional prison facilities across the nation will also get the rice and bean donations to be made to the prison. The donation was made on behalf of the Indian Business Chamber of which he is the founding chairman.
Varney Lake, the superintendent of the Monrovia Central Prison, praised Mr. Jeety for consistently helping prisoners all around the nation. The Indian Chamber’s contribution to the fight against hunger at the prison, he claimed, was still appreciated and celebrated by the prison administration. Mr. Lake insisted that Jeety and others’ contributions and acts of kindness be handled appropriately and that this provided a springboard for future contributions and help at the facility.
