Monrovia, Liberia – Large amounts of drugs have been effectively captured by join security personnel in Lofa County as part of a significant operation to stop the illegal drug trade. In the course of the operation, which was carried out by the Liberia National Police (LNP) and the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA), 772 compressed plates of marijuana as well as two additional substances that could be harmful to the public’s health trauma-k and trauma-doll were seized.
It is reported that the narcotics were transported into Liberia from Sierra Leone, where they were made locally. The effective operation was conducted close to the border region between Sierra Leone, Lofa County, and Foya, which is a well-known drug trafficking route. A number of people, including citizens of Sierra Leone and a Liberian, have been arrested on suspicion of participating in the trafficking scheme.
While an official declaration on the worth of the narcotics is yet to be issued, local officials have acknowledged that this constitutes one of the greatest drug busts in the region in recent years. The size of the operation reflects the rising worries over drug trafficking in the area and the efforts by local security personnel to combat such criminal activities.
This represents a major milestone in the ongoing fight against drug trafficking as it is the first time that so many drugs have been seized in Lofa County. While applauding the security forces for their efforts, locals have called for increased watchfulness and more robust measures to stop drug-related crimes from spreading.
Additional information regarding the current investigation and possible charges against the suspects has not yet been made public by the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency or the Liberia National Police.
