Monrovia, Liberia – Representative Kortor Kwagrue, who was recently elected to represent Nimba County District #5, started political unrest by cautioning those he referred to as “enemies within” and promising to oppose any attempt to dissolve the Movement for Democracy and Reconstruction (MDR), which was established by the late Nimba political godfather, Senator Prince Y. Johnson.
After Samuel G. Kogar was promoted to the Liberian Senate, Representative Kwagrue won the August 12, 2025, by-election in Nimba County District #5. Earlier, in April 2025, Kogar won the Nimba County senate by-election, filling the void left by the death of Senator Johnson, who many referred to as the guy who founded Nimba’s current political superiority.
In a passionate declaration, Rep. Kwagrue emphasized that the MDR was established to safeguard Nimba County’s political identity and influence, not to act as a playground for opportunists looking to further their own agendas. He said he refused to allow the party’s principles diminish.
The Lawmaker issued a warning that any attempt by people or organizations to change the goals of the MDR will be fiercely opposed. He added that he is willing to face off against anyone who opposes the party’s original principles. Since then, his remarks have caused conflicting responses throughout the county, with some applauding his loyalty and others charging him with sowing division among the party members.
Rep. Kwagrue asserts that Prince Johnson’s vision of a powerful, independent political voice must not be allowed to fade and that the MDR must continue to serve as a symbol of progress and solidarity for the people of Nimba. He promised to only collaborate with leaders who put the needs of the people before their own aspirations.
The vocal lawmaker also criticized those who disagreed with Vice President Jeremiah Koung, dismissing persistent claims that the VP has let the people of Nimba down. He claimed that with the construction of a large hospital and numerous development projects throughout the county, VP Koung is aggressively fulfilling his pledges.
Rep. Kwagrue argued that real progress is evident in the projects taking place on the ground and characterized such criticisms as baseless political propaganda meant to damage the MDR’s reputation and discredit the vice president.
According to political analysts, Representative Kwagrue’s comments may exacerbate already-existing rifts within the MDR as the party negotiates an unpredictable and power-playing period following Prince Johnson death. Many claim that his remarks mark the start of a new era in Nimba’s politics, one in which ambition, loyalty, and legacy will clash.
