Monrovia, Liberia – The Commissioners Women’s team’s coach Varney Williams and player Mirelle Hne have been suspended for two seasons by the Liberia Basketball Association.

The Technical Committee, led by Mr. Benedict Sayeh, made a suggestion that served as the foundation for the LBA activity.

In his match report from July 7, 2024, between the Commissioners Women’s team and the Invincible Eleven Women’s team during Phase 2 of the 2024 League Season, Mr. Sayeh suggested that strong action be taken against the Commissioners, players and technical staff because of their post-match conduct.

Calvin Diggs, Secretary General of the Liberia Basketball Association, declared their suspension on July 19, 2024 in accordance with the LBA Constitution, based on the findings and the gravity of the actions detailed.

Player Mireille Hne #15, whose physical attack on referee Mr. Thomas Hayward is in violation of Article VII, Section 8 of the LBA Constitution, is suspended for both games and practices.

Coach Varney Williams of the Commissioners Female Team face a one-season suspension due to his disrespectful and threatening behavior toward Mr. Hayward and the officiating staff. The LBA Constitution’s Article VIII, Section 7 governed the suspension.

In compliance with Article VIII, Section 7 of the LBA Constitution, the Commissioners Female Team’s Nurse (Physio) has been suspended for one season for her disruptive behavior.

In addition, Mr. Victor Hne, who made threats against Mr. Hayward, has been barred from all LBA activities indefinitely, with no more notice granted until the Grievance Committee’s formal hearing is over.

The LBA Secretary General stated that these steps are required to protect our league’s safety and integrity and that violence of any kind, threats, or disrespect for officials and personnel would not be tolerated by the organization.

According to Mr. Diggs, those who have been suspended possess the entitlement to file a formal request for an appeal with the Grievance and Ethics Committee.
