As House Leadership Signs MoU with Company

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the provision of group life and medical insurance for the staff members of the Central Administration of the House of Representatives has been signed by the management of the National Insurance Corporation of Liberia (NICOL) and the leadership of the House of Representatives in accordance with the law.

The National Insurance Corporation of Liberia’s (NICOL) Monrovia headquarters hosted the official signing ceremony on Monday. The managing director of the National Insurance Corporation of Liberia, Mr. Sam Mannah, Mr. Johnson Gwaikolo, the chairman of the rules, order, and administration committee, and Rep. Joseph N. Somwarbi, the chairman of the House of Representatives committee on health, represented the leadership of the House of Representatives.

The two institutions’ signing ceremony fulfills a commitment made to the staff members of the House of Representatives Central Administration by the leadership of the House of Representatives, led by Speaker Dr. Bhofal Chambers, in addition to being in accordance with the law.

Speaking on behalf of the National Insurance Corporation of Liberia, Mr. Sam Mannah said that President Weah’s decision to revive NICOL is a true testament to his determination to help the country’s citizens escape poverty and achieve economic prosperity. He added that when NICOL is fully revitalized, it will make a significant contribution to national development and economic growth.

The NICOL Managing Director also expressed gratitude to the House of Representatives leadership for taking the initiative in accordance with the corporation’s founding act, which directs it to handle all insurances for the government of Liberia, public corporations, and any businesses in which it owns at least a 50% stake.

The Managing Director of the National Insurance Corporation of Liberia, Mr. Sam Mannah, and Rep. Johnson Gwaikolo, the Chairman of the rules, order and administration committee at the House of Representative

Speaking on behalf of the House of Representatives leadership, Rep. Johnson Gwaikolo, commended NICOL’s Managing Director, Mr. Sam Mannah, and his team for using the institution’s limited resources to effectively run the organization to a commendable status that demonstrates NICOL is prepared to be restored to its pre-war status. He also firmly urged all government institutions to follow the House of Representatives’ example.

According to a release from NICOL, Rep. Johnson Gwaikolo noted that “For NICOL to keep its doors opened with little resources, we believe this is commendable that you have embarked on rehabilitating, reengineering the activities of NICOL with very limited resources since this managing group took over with a very little support. We think it is laudable, and the House has recognized that and thought it wise to do everything possible to lend its support to the success of this corporation. So we thank you and congratulations!  We have gathered here today to sign this insurance document as a consequence of the desire and the commitment made to our staffers. You know that at the onset of the 54 legislature, we thought that it’s important for all of us in the House to be insured and brought under some umbrella that would provide some coverage and protection in time of illness or even death. In that effort, we thought NICOL could provide that opportunity for us, why? Because NICOL is one of us, NICOL is our own, so it only makes sense for us to wrap our arms around our own and lift it up, empower it for it to cater to us in the way and manner we wish we like to do. So that’s why we have come here to NICOL”.

Rep. Joseph N. Somwarbi, reaffirmed the need for all government institutions to maintain legal insurance coverage with the NICOL. “NICOL is our own and we must all support our own”.

NICOL informs the general public that from July 1, 2022, the MoU between NICOL and the House leadership will officially go into force. It also contains a condition that can be reviewed annually.
