Lenn Eugene Nagbe Crises US Embassy’s Silence on Violations of Human Rights caused by UP Gov’t

Monrovia, Liberia – Former Commissioner General of the Liberia Maritime Authority Lenn Eugene Nagbe has blasted the US Embassy close to Monrovia for keeping quiet about early abuses of human rights committed by the Unity Party-led administration in Kinjor and other regions of the nation.

In a radio interview, Mr. Nagbe expressed disappointment that the US Embassy will only address the suspension of the July 2023 Revised Passport Regulations, without addressing the government’s violations of human rights in Kinjor, Grand Cape Mount County, and other locations.

Mr. Nagbe did, however, note that he had asked to speak with the US Embassy’s Political Officer about the most recent development.

“After reading a post from the US Embassy congratulating the Minister of Foreign Affairs, I phoned someone there and asked to make an appointment to speak with the Political Officer. We did not notice a post on the deaths in Kinjor, so I would want to ask the American Embassy. No post was seen, regardless of whether Boakai or Weah was the reason for the kinjor incident.”

Mr. Nagbe went on to explain that the US government is extremely strong and that its actions, words, and opinions have an impact on Liberian politics. But did they say anything in Kinjor when people died? No. But the US Embassy says, “Yeah, it’s fine,” in response to foreign minister declaring that all passports have been canceled and making a remark implying that the person doesn’t know what they are doing.
